I had the good fortune of being asked to join the one and only Rich Medcraft of StitchWise Embroidery in a presentation on thin threads put on by the good people of Madeira USA. In the webinar, we discuss some of the latest offerings from Madeira specifically of course, but we also had a chance to talk a bit about the technical side of using thin thread for embroidery and what it can achieve as far as small detail, tiny letters and the like.

40wt Matte Thread runs just a bit thinner than standard 40wt, very smooth for redwork like this.

Alice Wolf lead the discussion which had me and the talented Rich describing working with thin threads and explaining the use cases that make it valuable. There’s real tested value in the back and forth; Rich is very experienced with the thread in general, and I brought a little bit of my own testing and larger-scale production digitizing experience to bear on calibrating yourself to the small thread and what it takes to put it to good use in your shop.

In the video we present information on 40 wight matte finish thread, 60wt thread, both rayon and poly which is about %75 the thickness of 40wt, and the hair-thin 75wt thread, with a brief stop off at a 50wt thin metallic.

The 75 weight thread is amazingly thin, I was very how much detail you can manage.

Those who know me well know that I run about 7 brands of thread- I’m pretty agnostic as it comes to brands; if your stuff is good, I’ll run it. I have to admit, these threads were good. If you want to learn more about thin thread and listen to Rich and I bat back and forward with the wonderful Alice Wolf as moderator, scroll up to the embedded video and press play; it just might be worth your while.
